Review & Description

Dragon s newest venture into space models encompasses the famous Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and the Space Shuttle Discovery. This space shuttle blasted off from the Kennedy Space Center on 11 February 1997 on STS-82, a servicing mission. The HST, this vital space-probing piece of astronomical equipment, underwent servicing by crewmen of the Discovery. This was the second servicing mission for this high-tech telescope that was placed in orbit in 1990. The maintenance significantly upgraded the HST s capabilities with new apparatus like the new Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) and Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS). The work carried out by the Discovery s crew ensured the HST could operate until the next scheduled servicing in 1999. The mission involved five spacewalks, where the crew used up to 150 different tools or instruments at various stages. Space Shuttle Discovery returned to Earth ten days later after the successful completion of this mission. Read more

Review & Description

easykit pocket - great easykit fun in miniature format. All parts pre-painted and printed of course. Simply snap them together and you're ready to play.Darth Maul's personal spaceship is conspicuous for its unusually long nose. Its best feature by far is the camouflage system that makes it invisible to most sensors. The equipment is operated by the rare and costly stygium crystals that are only obtainable on the Aeten II planets in the outer rim, so that hardly any such camouflage systems are found on other spacecraft. In addition to its six concealed laser cannon, the Infiltrator carries a broad range of additional equipment, including Darth Maul's Speeder and various Droid sensors. The powerful ion drive gives it high speeds in space, while the Sienar SSDS hyper spacedrive only offers medium speeds. The Infiltrator is known for the pursuit of the Jedi on Tatooine and was discovered on Naboo after the showdown with Qui Gon-Jinn. The origin of this spacecraft is unknown, but that it is connected with the Sienar System research laboratory is shown by the round cockpit, also a feature of the TIE Fighter series. Darth Maul is one of the Zabrak people and comes from the planet Iridonia. He is recognizable by the round horns on his head. Read more

Review & Description

Alpha Centauri UFO's Kit Dispatched from their mother ships, these Short Range UFO's piloted by strange alien beings explore vast star systems looking for new planets and resources to consume. Reporting back on all they find, they are the ideal craft to scout low-tech planets such as our own. Virtually invisible to radar, sonar, and microwave scanning, they are undetectable by our primitive technology. With the inability to travel the full 1.34 parsecs from Alpha Centauri to our solar system, they require long range transport from their larger ships to destinations deemed viable for resources. Dispatched in small squadrons, they can quickly reach any destination in our solar system, and maybe sample a few cattle along the way! Kit Includes: Pieces to build two UFO's with 2 alien pilots. Molded in grey plastic. Includes landing gear and closed hatch panel for in-flight versions. Read more

Skylab was the United States' first space station, and the second space station occupied by a human crew. The 100-ton space station orbited the Earth from 1973 to 1979 and was visited by crews three times in 1973 and 1974. Skylab was launched on May 14 1973 on a Saturn INT-21 (a two-stage version of the Saturn V rocket) into a 235 nautical mile (435 km) orbit. The Saturn INT-21 was an American orbital launch vehicle of the 1970s. It was derived from the Saturn V Rocket used for the Apollo program, and is casually referred to as a modified Saturn V. It was only launched once, to carry the Skylab space station into orbit. Read more

Review & Description

Apollo 16 (April 16 April 27 1972) was launched from John F. Kennedy Space Center and was the fifth manned lunar landing mission. The crew consisted of John W. Young as spacecraft commander Ken Mattingly as command module pilot and Charlie Duke as lunar module pi lot. Apollo 16 was the first scientific expedition to inspect survey and sample materials and surface features in the Descartes region of the rugged lunar highlands. Duke commenced the record setting lunar surface stay of 71 hours and 14 minutes by maneuvering the lunar module Orion to a landing on the rough Cayley Plains. Charles Moss Duke Jr. (or Charlie Duke) a retired USAF Brigadier General was a United States astronaut for NASA. He is one of only twelve men who have walked on the moon. In the 1998 miniseries From the Earth to the Moon Charlie Duke was portrayed by J. Downing. It was Charles Duke who left a plastic-encased photo portrait of his family on the moon. Read more

Review & Description

The USA planned to phase out all expendable launch vehicles (ELV) after the Space Shuttle entered service. However, the Challenger accident of 1986 changed all that, and the Delta program was restarted. Termed Delta II, these rockets have made nearly 150 successful launches since 1989, making it the most reliable system in service. As an ELV, each rocket can only be launched once. Among the Delta II s missions are the launching of GPS Block II satellites, Kepler telescope, Deep Impact space probe and several Mars missions for NASA. The latter includes the Mars Phoenix lander in 2007. Read more

Review & Description

The Titan family of expendable rockets was extremely successful, with a total of 368 rockets launched between 1959 and 2005. One of the rockets from this family was the Titan IIIC, this being a space booster used for US Air Force (USAF) missions. This rocket built by Martin Marietta first flew on 18 June 1965, and its final flight was in 1982. The Titan IIIC was indispensable in launching large payloads into space, serving as the largest unmanned space booster until the Titan IV entered service in 1988. A 13.1 ton payload could be sent into a low-earth orbit, or 3 tons could be sent into a geosynchronous transfer orbit. One of the Titan IIIC?s strengths was its flexibility, for it could utilize no upper stage, or one of two optional stages. This meant the 42m-long rocket could carry a variety of payloads depending on the mission. Read more

Review & Description

Discovery is one of three operational Space Shuttles in NASA?s current fleet. As the third orbiter in service, it?s now the oldest Shuttle in the fleet. Its maiden flight occurred in August 1984. Among its achievements was the launching of the Hubble Space Telescope. Thus far it has performed 38 missions, the most recent being last year. To transport its fleet of spacecraft, NASA employs two extensively modified Boeing 747s. For example, the specially modified aircraft can be used if a Shuttle needs to be transported from a landing site to the Kennedy Space Center launch complex, or for any other journey that is too far for ground transport. These large transporter aircraft are appropriately enough known as Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA), one being a 747-100 and the other a 747-100SR. The Boeing 747 is ideal for this task owing to its low-wing design, although the extra drag and weight reduces the aircrafts? range to 1,850km. On a transcontinental flight, the SCA would have to land several times to refuel. When the Shuttle program concludes this year, the SCAs will carry the remaining spacecraft to their final resting places, before themselves being retired. Display in flight or on the ground (stand included). Read more
